How do I get started with BackHug?

Everything you need to know before you start a BackHug session. Including tips to get the most out of your treatment and important safety information

Search 'BackHug' to find and download your App. Register your account, after which you will be able to connect your device to your smartphone and start operating it with the App.

Complete in-App consultation

Complete our 1:1 back-care questionnaire (designed by our physio experts) to analyse your back care needs and create a program unique to you.

Freedom of choice

Remember that you can adjust your treatment strength, speed and program, allowing you to adapt them to your individual needs in real time. Depending on how stiff or sensitive the different parts of your back are, you can adjust the strength settings independently for four different treatment areas – neck, shoulder blades, upper and lower back, as easily as adjusting the volume on your phone.

3-4 weekly sessions

We recommend using BackHug 2-3 times a week for optimal benefits. As with other healthy habits like going to the gym, balance is best!

Turn music on, world off

Use our BackHug music feature and listen to music, meditation or other favourite relaxation sounds (like wind or rainfall), during each session. Alternatively, try our in-App integration, you can enjoy your favourite playlists from Spotify, Audible & more!

Max 60 minutes

Don’t use BackHug for more than 60 minutes a day. Regular use of BackHug is more important than too much at once, which helps you maintain your healthy back and general wellbeing, so make it a habit.

Pressure marks or even bruising

Because the treatment pressure can be firm and strong, repeated BackHug use over time can leave pressure marks on your back or even bruises. In that case, please leave enough of a gap between the sessions to allow your skin to recover. You may also want to reduce the treatment pressure or wear additional clothing, like an extra t-shirt.

Clothes

Wear a light to medium thickness top such as a T-shirt. A very thick top may reduce the treatment benefits. If you find the pressure too much, wearing extra clothes can make the treatment pressure gentler.

Keep warm

We recommend using a blanket to cover and keep your body warm during the session. Your body temperature tends to decrease when you become relaxed during the session.

Strength

In general, the stronger the treatment, the better it is for you - but you don’t want it to be uncomfortable.

We recommend you start on a low setting for each treatment area and then carefully increase the strength to the highest level at which you feel comfortable.

As your session progresses and you relax during treatment, you’ll probably find that you’re able to enjoy a stronger strength setting. We therefore recommend that you start on a strength setting that’s comfortable for you, but then keep increasing the strength during treatment as you relax, to get the maximum benefit from the treatment.

But please be aware that your treatment shouldn’t be uncomfortable.

If you ever feel uncomfortable in any part of your body that is being treated by BackHug, you should reduce the strength in that area (or even turn the fingers treating that area to zero to switch them off, if necessary).

Neck positioning

For the ideal neck positioning, make sure that the top two fingers touch the top of your neck, or just below the Occipital Bun at the back of your head. The App will help guide you to the optimal position before treatment starts.

Body positioning

Keep your body in the middle of the device. This allows the treatment fingers to apply pressure evenly on both sides of your back, including the shoulder blades.

Belt and hair

We recommend that you remove your belt so that it doesn't interfere with your lower back treatment. Similarly, we recommend that you keep your hair away from your neck, so it doesn’t interfere with your neck treatment.

Hands-free

Tuck your phone in the phone pocket located at the side of the device. Why not enjoy no calls or texts and focus only on yourself for a while?

Common side effects

You may experience headaches or dehydration or feel lethargic after using BackHug, especially for the first few weeks. These reactions are not uncommon after a good therapy session, such as a good massage from a therapist.

Drink plenty of water and have a good rest after the session if you need to.
